Bookkeeping, payroll and taxes for restaurants

Meals tax, tips, a large payroll and thin margins. We keep a restaurant's books, payroll and tax filings right, every month, from our office in Rockland.

What is different about restaurants

Massachusetts meals tax

Meals tax returns filed on time, including the local option meals excise in towns that have adopted it, and advance payments when your sales are large enough to require them.

Tips and tipped staff

Massachusetts lets restaurants pay tipped staff a lower cash wage only when tips bring them up to the full minimum wage. Payroll has to track that, and report tips correctly.

The tip credit on your return

The federal credit for employer Social Security and Medicare taxes paid on tips can be worth real money. We check that you claim it.

Large food and beverage establishments

Restaurants where tipping is customary and more than ten people usually work file an annual tip report with the IRS (Form 8027). We tell you if that is you.

Food cost and prime cost

Monthly books that separate food, beverage and labor, so you can see the numbers that decide whether a month made money.

One office for all of it

Books, payroll and the business return in one place means the numbers agree with each other, and someone who knows your business answers the phone.

Questions

Can you take over payroll in the middle of the year?

Yes. We bring your year-to-date history across so your staff's W-2s come out right.

Do you file Massachusetts meals tax?

Yes, monthly or as often as DOR requires, along with any advance payments.
